To the Gold Coast…We caught another crazy seat sale, so we went to the Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise to hang out for 4 days. We were expecting awesome weather, but it turned out to be part good and sunny, part mediocre, wet and intense sky activity. The water was quite agitated, and wandering too far off the beach was ill advised, so the plan to give the surfboard a try will yet have to wait for another opportunity.
The Gold Coast is probably the most popular tourist destination in Australia, where the high-rise and the beaches go for miles, together with the fancy shops and touristy entertainment, the America of Australia in a way. The area is a bit too tacky and touristy for my taste, but the beach was awesome even without the surf. The gold coast is also where the whole of the 5 Australian Theme Park are located. They market it as the “Home to more attractions than any other destination in the Southern Hemisphere, the Gold Coast has the fastest, the longest, the highest and the most exciting thrill rides”.
But then, what’s the competition? Africa and South America? Then they do win. They also like to use this slogan for marketing various entertainment and restaurants, when saying they are the best in Australia is not enough, they add the whole southern hemisphere, it does add an effect of grandeur.
The Dreamworld theme park was fun, small compared to what we have back home, but satisfying, as there were no line up anywhere so we could easily make ourselves sick by repeatedly riding the rides.
