Up North ↑

I recently had the pleasure of seeing my dear friend Véronique, who decided to take the long journey across the globe to come visit us here in Australia. Outside of showcasing what Melbourne has to offer, we decided to go up north to Queensland in search of pretty beaches and sun.

We choose to go on a sailboat expedition for a few days to explore the Whitsundays and the outer Barrier Reef. We were reluctant at first, based on the extreamely bad weather Quensland had been having in the past few months, constant rain and tropical cyclones were not a promising outlook for blue skies and warm weather. Bad weather and sailboat are especially not a good combination, but no risk, no fun... se we decided to book it in, with all the positive thinking we could gather. And lucky us! We had the best weather we could have hoped for :]

We cruised along with Sailboat Kiana, with 14 guests and 3 crew, for 3 days and 2 nights. It was an interesting experience. The scenery made up for the cramped space on the boat, but it was a fun ride. We slept in a small cabin at the front of the boat, very tiny space, but functional, lucky we had a small skylight window, because it did get stuffy in there! Our days were spent sailing, sunbathing, snorkeling and diving. I saw my first massive turtle! They are so gracious in the water...We saw some sharks and many clourful fish.

After the sailing trip, we made our way down to Byron Bay for a few relaxing days, eating good food, and surfing. This was my first time trying surfing (finally!) and it was amazing. Much harder than I thought it would be, but I did stand up (but outside of this petty feat, I pretty much sucked, I will definitely have to try again.
Here are some pics.

In the valley

While my friend Véronique was visiting Melbourne, we went for an afternoon drive to the Yarra Valley, in search of good food and good wine. I also found the best cider I've tasted so far, the Napoleone & Co cider, by Punt Road Wines, offer both an apple and pear cider that are equally excellent. I am a sucker for a good deal, so I signed up for a membership card, and can now look forward to a bi-yearly delivery of well-priced great wines and cider...
Oh the little pleasures in life...
