The city of Melbourne has already begun ramping up adverts for the 2015 White Night, and here we are, yet to have posted our photos from last February's event. For the uninitiated, a 'White Night' is a city-wide event where shops, galleries and other well known public spaces are opened up for a late night after hours crowd. Emphasis on crowd. 2014 was only the second time Melbourne has hosted such an event, and it was crazy popular. The two of us went into the city with the intention of seeing just one exhibit at the National Gallery, but the crowds on the tram should have been enough to foreshadow the absolute crush of humanity we were about to face. In the end we abandoned our initial plans in favour of people watching and 'just getting into anything without an insane line'. That particular line-less event turned out to be a rather dull presentation of an antique player piano at the Performing Arts Centre. No complaints from me as I was just happy to get off my feet and take a breather. Predictably, the sombre music wasn't much of a draw for the rowdy mix of intoxicated and/or half-asleep spectators. I'll probably give this year's event a pass, but if you've never experienced a 'White Night', then it is well worth a visit if only to see what all the fuss is about.
