Oz has got their lot of homegrown star system, some we know well, and some who don't make too much noise out of the continent. It is also a land where the one hit wonders keep on rolling.
There's this pretty neat radio station called triple J which is worth a listen, it's a national radio station which is not so commercial, they play good tunes, and no ads, so its great. Like our own great CBC back in Canada. You can also listen online, and they have heaps of Podcasts. They're broadcasted all across australia (seriously, when we drove from Melbourne to Perth, it's the only station that we could catch for most of the middle of nowhere, outside of radio coverage of Cricket games, which is as interesting as it sounds).
There's a great music scene, and here are a few bands from here that are worth a listen, so check them out to expand your library: Cut Copy, Muscles, The Panics, PNAU, Bumblebeez, Josh Pyke, Architecture In Helsinki, Sia, Empire of the Sun, to name a few...
Also, not from here but from New Zealand, Flight of the Conchords' show on HBO is worth a look, they're just funny and full of unexpected musical wonders for your eyes and ears. The Bowie in Space clip is a favorite.
Word wise, In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson is also a good read. It's a great book about Oz and traveling here down under, where he offers his perspective on Australia, while including historical facts, and I think he succeeds in capturing the essence of Australian life, in a Bryson way. So if you want to find out a little more on life here down under, grab this book.
Next up, the Aussie films, there's a festival coming up, and I'll try to catch a few flicks.
